ASHTON - UNDER - LYNE
A new build education facility, providing an innovation and business incubation centre for Tameside College, at Ask Developments’ St Petersfield scheme, in Ashton-under-Lyne.
Working on a restricted site, Create led the design team to produce a contemporary 3 storey structure, sympathetic to surrounding buildings
Effective space planning ensured spacious classrooms, break-out areas, meeting rooms and 20 seater boardroom, together with a small cafe and an outdoor seating area.
The building achieved a BREEAM Very Good rating.
CLIENT: ASK Developments
PROJECT: Student Accommodation
Create partnered with Tameside College to develop a student programme which focused on vocational aspects of student learning, giving students practical, hands on experience, as they prepared for a career in the construction industry.
As part of the programme, students visited the site to hear the latest developments, as the build progressed. Site visits included workshops with key contractors, where students were able to discuss ongoing progress and debate key topic areas, including mechanical and electrical issues and implementation.
Create developed a number of initiatives where students were involved with the new college facility and students gained valuable experience of a 'live' site environment
Royal Seal of Approval
HRH The Duke of Gloucester officially opened the new building on completion and Paul Mathison, Create's Managing Director and Create's project delivery team; Operation's Manager, Dylan Kaneand Project QS, David Worsleywere amongst distinguished guests to welcome His Royal Highness.
The Duke, a former architect himself, congratulated the Create team and commented on their effective space planning, despite the building being on very restricted site, together with the excellent standard and high quality of the building.
"Create Construction worked very closely with myself and colleagues from the design stage to project delivery, ensuring that the building would exactly meet the College’s needs whilst working within the constraints of the tight budget. The company guided us through the process and invested time at the highest level. They demonstrated their ability to work within very tight timescales whilst not jeopardising quality standards. The pressure to complete on time was intensified by a royal visit to open the Centre within one week of handover!
From the initial meeting Create Construction were also keen to work with the College’s students so they had an opportunity to follow the progress of the building where it was relevant to their curriculum. Create suggested establishing a shadow project team from our Construction students.
Create Construction sponsored Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for the Construction students who were able to visit the site at various stages to watch its progress, to learn more about how a design moves from conception to a completed building and to be able to apply theory to practice. This was an invaluable experience for those students.
I have been highly satisfied with the building delivered by Create Construction and by the professional way in which it has been delivered. I have been on site myself several times and have always experienced excellent “customer service”.
